A big thank YOU to everyone on the the reunion Planning Committee.  A large task, complicated by COVID with many cancellations, continued dates/updates and re-dos. But YOU did it and did it very well.  Thank YOU all again.

And thank you to all of our teachers, staff and coaches for their concern, counselling and guidance.

It was so great to see evryone, but it went by sooooo fast.  Just like the 50 2 yrs. I wish I had more time to spend & reminisce with each YOU - and hopefully will be able to do that sometime soon by moving back to Florida - where my heart has always been.

I'm so thankful for all our shared expereinces and so proud to call you my firends and classmates. GO SAILORS!

Hoping, waiting & wanting - to do it again!  Sooner, rather than laster.

I wish you all the best and a bright sun shiney day.  With Love, GLZ.

What a good time we had at the 1970 HS reunion.  Meeting people I have not seen in 52 years was a real treat. So many great memories we had together as a class. Thank you so so much to the committee and the volunteers and classmates and especially those that traveled so far to make this happen.

On March 13, 2022 I turned 70 years old. Thank you for the birthday cards from the SHS Class of 1970! I am married to Kathy (Waddell) Mulford, RHS Class of 1971. On January 23, 2022 we celebrated 51 years of marriage. We have four children and in April will welcome our ninth grandchild. My wife is retired and I am still actively working as Lead Pastor of Grace Bible Baptist Church in Leesburg, FL, a position I have held for 31 years. I also serve as a volunteer chaplain for Lake County Sheriff's Office, Fruitland Park Police Department, and UF Health Leesburg Hospital. I am a Senior Chaplain with the International Conference of Police Chaplains and serve on the CISM Team for the Lake County Sheriff's Office. I love helping people and my passion is to share the love of Christ with everyone I meet, for it was Jesus Who changed my life completely in July of 1972. God bless each of you dear friends!

Greetings,
Just purchased my tickets and booked some travel for the 50 reunion.   My wife and I moved to Asheville NC two years ago just in time for Covid and working from home.  I have been working as a CPA for a very long time and just gave my notice (the final one).  Looking forward to retirement.  See you in Sarasota.

Hi SHS classmates, I sure as hell hope COVD-19 doesn't mess up our reunion. With it being at the end of May, I'm hopeful it won't. Let's all try to bring as many photographs (digital files of course) that reflect our lives, the SHS years and beyond. Wouldn't it be fun to do some slide shows? Either set aside some time Saturday or Sunday or put something together the following Monday or Tuesday? Discuss... Cheers, Ross Hamilton

I send a big thank you to everyone working on the 50th Reunion.  Your energy and efforts are appreciated.  Thank you.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again (it has been too long and too infrequent; hard to believe fifty [50] years has gone by) and a moment of silence to remember our classmates who unfortunately have left us.

Things on the Left coast just keep getting crazier.  Working on a federal case to increase representation/apportionment ( https://stafnelaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/CFR-DOCKET-October-2019-1.pdf ) - which is one of the biggest issues fconfronting us on both state & federal level and the cause of so many of our problems.  California has the WORST representation of any state - it last added a member to the legislature in 1862, when state population was less than 400,000; Cal has since added 40,500,000 persons and now Assembly distircts are 500,000 and State Senate distircts 1,000,000 ;  Feds last added a member to the House in 1911, when the country's population was less than 95,000,000 - now the population is over 320,000,000 and House districts are  770,000 .  Representation was so important, it was the original first 1st Amendment.  See The Original Bill of Rights Had 12 Amendments ( https://www.thoughtco.com/original-bill-of-rights-and-amendments-3322334 ).  Instead of having representative Republics - our governments have become Oligarchies - and the Will of the People get ignored.  The case is currently on appeal in the 9th Circuit.

See ya all at the end of May.  My best, GLZ.

I have been retired since 2011. I have played guitar since I was 10 years old so I decided to build some custom guitars. My other interest has been Solar Photovoltaics, I have several patents that are in use today which are crucial for controlling voltages on Solar Panel use. I was made aware of my Ojibwa ‘Chippewa” heritage when I was in SMH with Cancer back in 1983. I survived the Cancer and became interested in finding out more about my Native Heritage. It has been a very interesting journey.  I have 4 girls and 4 grandchildren, 1 grandson and 3  Granddaughters.  I have been in Sarasota since graduating High School except for  College at USF in Tampa, and a 9 month job project in Longbeach, Ca.

wow what a trip back in time.  i graduated from shs in 1976. it was an excellent school during your time and it was the same during my time. by all accounts it is even better now.  however, i am sad to see the OLD building deteriorate, and completely reconstructed on the inside, and the newer buildings from 1958 being deconstructed. what a shame.

Most of you won't remember me although I was a graduate of the Class of 1970. I didn't participate in any school activities and I was fairly anti-social. However, seeing this web page brings back memories and I feel inspired to say "hello". I think its great that all of you reunited after 40 years (we can't be that old, can we?) and there's a small part of me that wanted to join in. Ultimately, I didn't....probably for some of the same reasons I didn't participate 40 years ago!  Was that period of time (late 60's & early 70's) really special or are we the only one's who think that? Anyway, I wish you all good health and happy trails.

Reflections on our reunion:

1.  The first class manner in which it was done.

Friday was perfect.  Marina Jacks is such a great venue to meet and greet in a casual, yet classy atmosphere.

The Saturday tour of the school was well planned and accomplished exactly what it should have. Way to go Jane Sue!

Saturday night was awesome.  Ronnie has a great ranch and everything from the tent to the band to the catering company made for a really fun night.  Even the port-a-potties were "a cut above"!  Thanks, Ron!  Oh, and I especially enjoyed Steve Hardee parking my car. Very appropriate for a "lower classman". It just proves that '70 will always rule over '71!

So thanks, committee, for not cutting corners and making an early decision to do it right!

2.  Liz ought to start a small business to consult with other reunions on how to set up a website.  She probably says "no way", but I believe that her website was responsible for such a high attendance for a 40 year reunion.  It was amazing.  I haven't seen the numbers, but I heard around 230 attended at least some part of it.  If we had about 460 to graduate, and 40 are deceased- well do the math and that is an incredible percentage.    I live way far away and found myself having to check the thing at least every week or two just to see what was going on.  By the time I got there after checking the website for about 8 months, I had an idea about what many were doing and how everyone was.  It was great!

3.  It made me remember what a beautiful place Sarasota was to grow up in.  So, to everyone who still lives there- don't take it for granted.

Thanks for a great time!

Steve and Judy Wood

Thank you Class of 1970 for your tremendous support of our 40th reunion.  So many of you made the effort to attend, and many more who could not attend posted messages on the guest book.

I wish to reiterate special thanks to all who served on the reunion committee, and especially Blythe McDonough, who, as reunion committee chair, spent countless hours planning the events and locating missing classmates; Alicia Fruehwald, who worked closely with Blythe from the beginning and who, with her committee, provided all the decorations; Ronnie Roehr, who volunteered his ranch property as the location for our Saturday night activities; Leslie Beahm, who put together the great videos for our enjoyment; and Liz Beahm, who created this phenomenal website.  I also want to mention Rusty Glendinning, who again acted as our able treasurer.  Other classmates contributed substantial amounts to underwrite various expenses of the reunion, to help keep the cost of attendance affordable for all, and we appreciate their generosity.

It was a time of reminiscence and reconciliation, and for that we can all be especially grateful.  Forty years later, I am more proud than ever to be a member of this class.

Dear Former Students of Andy Wright,

Kirby Sanders, the current choral director of Sarasota High’s Singing Sailors, and his students have opened up part of their final concert of the year “the Final Bow” as a time to pay tribute to Andy and all that he has done for the music program at Sarasota High. The concert is scheduled for Tuesday night, May 25 at 7 p.m. in the Sarasota High auditorium. On that concert Sarasota high chorus alumni will be invited to the stage to sing Kirby Shaw’s “Children of the Light” (commissioned for Andy by a group of his students). There will be a dress rehearsal of the alumni group on Monday evening, May 24 at 7 p.m. in the SHS Auditorium. Please let me know if you are planning to attend the rehearsal and performance so I can let Kirby know how many people to expect. My email address is: angela_hartvigsen@sarasota.k12.fl.us

Perhaps after the dress rehearsal there could be a get together for alumni…let me know if you are interested in coordinating that piece.

Thanks!!

Can't believe I am going to miss our 40th Class Reunion....but a trip to Sarasota this weekend was not workable.
My husband (of 25 years) Lee and I recently retired to the N.E. Georgia Mts. in a town called Hiawassee.  Our house overlooks the highest point in GA...Brasstown Bald....what a wonderful place to retire!
After graduating from UF I moved to the Atlanta area and have been there until the past couple of years.  I taught 30 years for the Cobb County School system....loved my job.  But now I am on to another career....My husband and I are part owners of an antique mall here in Hiawassee....collecting and selling antiques have become our addiction!
My parents and my two brothers are still in Sarasota so I try to get down there several times a year....and usually always at Christmas time.  It is amazing....the times that I am there... I rarely run into anyone from school....Sarasota has really grown and changed from what we knew it as high school kids.
Would love to hear from any of you....I can't wait to hear all about the reunion.  I have reserved an CD so I can see everyone in action.
Have a wonderful weekend....and hopefully I will be able to make the next one!

Second, a thought & moment of  contemplation, wonder and silence, to recollect & remember, those of our classmates, who too, too, early, have left us and passed on.  They, each one of them, are remembered and missed, and yet are still with us, in our hearts & minds.

I'm still on the LEFT COAST here in California, outside LA in Santa Clarita, Valencia.  This state has gone crazy.  Still fighting for LIBERTY, attempting reform of the legal/judicial system, which has been taken over by BIG MONEY, BIG LAW, SUPER LAWYERS.  Whatever happened to those history/social studies lessons about BIG BROTHER?  We forgot that one, and now also have its evil twin BIG CORPS.  The revolving door between the 2 is destroying us; they been disassembling the nuts & botls of our communities for decades.  Too big to fail?  No, it's too big too work.

Enough politics.  Got married at 36 to a beautiful & wonderful Lady - Angela - in Saipan, honeymooned in Hong Kong & Philipines.  Angela had/has 3 wonderful children, Mia, Leanna, & Ramon.  Got divorced after 5 yrs (we  still love each other, but not in love), and still see her and the kids regularly.  Have 5 grandkids, the youngest William was just baptized last Sunday.

After graduation, came to Cal on a trip with John Allen. We came back a few months later.  Started at MJC, dropped out, enlisted in USAF (promised Air Traffic Control, put in Security Police; basic in San Antonio, then Minot, ND, Saigon, Veit Nam, Korat, Thailand, Omaha, NB).  Resumed MJC, transferred to & grad (Bus. Mgmt.) from UofWF, Pensacola. Moved to Mobile, AL, computer sales Burroughs Corp.  Moved to LA for law school.

Praciticed insurance defense litiagtion (product liability, gov't tort, contruction defect), moved to pltf's legal malpractice (where I got my real legal education & my head handed to me), moved to legal/judcial/gov reform and did a stint as a prosecutor.  Legal counsel & media rep for SDJAC's initiative that got on South Dakota's 2006 ballot as "Amendement E"-  to limit the despicable, dastardly doctrine of Absolute Judiclal Immunity (that covers corrupt & malicious judicial acts - see Stump v. Sparkman, 435 U.S. 349 (1978) - read it and puke, weep.)  Find law challenging (recall that quote that "The Law is a jealous mistress"), but it is exponentially outweighed by the frustrations.  (Mistress?  Hell, it's a whorehouse.)  Too bad, because if done correctly, proper law could do wonders.  We were told the adversarial system & cross-examination are the engines of truth; some truth in theory, but in application we mostly have gotten much more conflict & much less truth - and the judges, lawyers & pols mostly got richer.  Obviously we have not been well served.  Life simply is not as complicated as our law/gov has made it.

Does anyone who went to SJHS - go MiIDDIES - recall Howard Porter?  Recall that he vehemently claimed that he knew Haley Mills (from the original movie 'Parent Trap' [or at least the 1 before Lindsey Lohan]), and convinced almost everyone, including the teachers/faculty, that she was in fact coming to SJHS to visit him?  And recall in PE class we did our Jumping Jacks shouting "Haley Mills is here today, if she isn't Porter pays"?  Of course, she never came.

Lotta miles, lotta memories, but not over the hill yet, and feel like I'm still a kid with a lot of climbing to do.

Again, thank you to the guys & gals who put this event together & who are bringing us back together again.

Can't wait to see everyone.  GLZ.

Greetings from Massachusetts!

It has been such fun to read all the comments you have left, and see the photo that's posted at the top of the site ( all of you usual suspects I would expect to see at a reunion!)  and to learn a little about your lives. I was sorry to find some of my friends in the Memorium column, however.

In a nutshell, I have lived in Massachusetts for 30 years, married, had two children, and now am thinking about moving back to Florida. ( winters being what they are up here...lol)  I'm sorry I could not make the 40th reunion, but If it's at all possible I've got my eyes set for the 50th..so keep me in mind when you start planning for the next celebration. I hope to see you all there...best wishes to you all and have a lovely reunion this time around.

Hey ya'll!  That's how we talk here in Georgia.  I've been here ever since I graduated from SHS and came to college in little bitty Milledgeville, Ga.  Met my husband on a blind date and 37 years later he's still the love of my life!  We live in Macon, Ga and we're both teachers.  I teach 3rd grade and he teaches 8th grade physical science.  I hate that I'll be unable to attend this reunion because we are right in the middle of state testing and 3rd grade is one of the critical grades so I can't be gone.  I haven't heard from Patricia Bolanos Chacon to see if she's coming but she did stop by my parents' home unexpectedly a few months ago and is doing well.  Her husband is the head of the hospital in Grecia and they have two daughters.  Ya'll have a great time.  I'll be thinking about you and maybe I'll make it to #50!

Hello,
I am looking forward to the reunion and will be at the Saturday event with my wife.  We live in Atlanta and when we are not working, we like to travel.  Just got back from San Francisco.  Most of my family still lives in Sarasota so I visit at least twice a year.
Thanks

Hello Everyone!
We are so disappointed we won't be able to attend after all, due to some very important church events the same weekend as the reunion. There's just no way we can come. Hope you all have a wonderful time! Sounds like the committee really has some great things lined up. Forty years really has flown by! Wish we could see everyone. Maybe we can make the 50th!Check out our web site at www.gbbconline.com.
Would love to hear from some of you. God bless!

P.S. Two more grandchildren on the way - soon we'll have seven! Must be getting old - HA!

Hi Everybody!
Wow, congratulations on the committee's unrelenting efforts to have a terrific reunion. Kudos. My husband of 21 years ( on April Fools Day), Larry and I won't be making it this reunion but will definately try for the big 50!
We live in St. Petersburg with my healthy and wonderful 88 year old Mom and are slowly adjusting to retirement. Sadly, we lost my eldest step son in September  at 42. The other four step children live in various places.
My health is greatly improved. In 2006 I was so ill, I coded (died) but thank God for wonderful doctors I survived and continue to be happily married and healthier by the say.
I wish EVERYONE a wonderful reunion and thank you again to the committee.

HELP!!!!     Does any one know where Rick Sapp and Larry Neubauer are?
THANK YOU Class of 1970  for the many happy, happy times and endless precious memories.  You are truly the best anyone could ask for.  Thank you for being such a special part of my life.
Now, if we could only find Rick and Larry, and everyone would come to the reunion and my slacker children would give me some GRANDCHILDREN (Gregg M. has suggested the awesome idea giving them an African Fertility Doll, which I'm seriousely considering), life would be perfect!  take care... look forward to seeing you all....

Wow! I just opened and read and watched most of the Booker Experience page.  It focuses my memories of that time.  I was one of those people whose family was from the “north,” though all of my education was in Sarasota County Schools.  I remember being excited about going to high school with black children or whatever, in those days of my consciousness, I would have called African American youth.  I was unaware of how hard it was for the students from Booker.  Most of my friends and acquaintances came through the band and tennis team and we didn’t talk about it much.  Yet the division of the races in my childhood stands out of one of the major themes of my childhood memories.  I think I was conscious of it all the time and troubled by it.  For the last 16 years I have been on the Racial and Economic Justice Taskforce of an organization in my community called the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice.  Recently we have been reading together in a book group and we are sponsoring, at my church, a community read of Paul Kivil’s, “Uprooting Racism.”  During the discussion last month, as one of the African American members of our committee, who is a dedicated educator about racism, was talking about wearing a “flesh” colored band-aid as a child, I flashed upon a childhood experience that I had totally forgotten. The fact that I had just read Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help,” may have contributed to this memory. My family shared a back-yard border with a family, in which the male householder was a prominent banker.  At one point near my high school years, someone tried to extort money from him, a lot of money.  This criminal threatened his family and the family’s safety and to show he was serious, he came to the house and murdered their maid, who was African American.  Obviously the horror of that incident, though so deeply buried in my psyche that I did not remember it for over 40 years, has remained with me.  Though the perpetrator was a criminal, the crass disregard for this woman’s life (someone whom he did not know, and from whom he could extort very little), seemed a symbol of much that was sick about our relationships in those days.  I totally appreciate the efforts of the Booker Experience group and hope that our next 40 years may be more aware, caring, and mutually inclusive of all of our class mates and all whom they love.

My dear friends and classmates,

Dale and I have been looking forward to seeing all of you at reunion, but I'm afraid that's not going to happen.  We have just learned from my doctors that I have to have my right hip replaced, so we can't be with you next month.  However, I have a sabbatical coming up this summer, and... if you're willing... I would be happy to arrange for a "continuation of the reunion celebration" somewhere convenient for everyone.  I have talked with Liz about it, and she says that the web-site will stay "up," so that we will all be able to stay in touch... so, "stay tuned for further updates."

Have a great time together, and know that I will be with you in spirit.

Blessings,
Reid

If you think 40 years went by fast, the next 2 months will fly by, and we can't wait to see all of you at our 40th Reunion on April 30 - May 1! Good news: you don't have to lose weight or have those Botox injections...or wear a bathing suit or a coat & tie! This not a beauty contest...it's all about rekindling old friendships and perhaps making new ones and enjoying each other for who we are today. So relax.

If you have not sent in your registration form and payment or registered online via credit card, please do so no later than April 1. We have a wonderful event planned for you and we must offset the expenses we have already incurred to confirm our plans at Marina Jack as well as for the feast at the Roehr Ranch. You know...great food, live music and lots of fun stuff! If you are planning to do the free tour of the SHS campus, please RSVP for that as well.

All the event details are on the EVENTS page of our website.

Don't forget to promote your business on our website and in our Reunion program book - details for this are at this are on the SAILOR SUPPORTER webpage - the deadline for this is  April 1.

Also, we need your help. Our goal is to have as many of our classmates as possible at the events. But...we have not been able to reach some of them. Please review the list on the WHO's MISSING webpage, and if you know how to reach any of them, direct them to our 40th Reunion website or ask them to call Blythe McDonough at 941-737-7074.

I also want to add my thanks to our very hardworking reunion committee for all the time spent on our reunion plans!

Can't wait to see all of you!

WOW.. what a nice web site, and what a rush of memories!  Looking forward to the event.  If anyone has contact info on Steve Parks or Tommie Ulrey(class of 70), or Byron Sanders (class of 71) I'd appreciate the info.  My family left town about 2 months after we all graduated in 1970, so I lost touch with most everyone.  My sister Penny Schlaf (class of 72) has now bought a condo in Sarasota after being gone 40 years, so you may be seeing both of us (for good or ill!) in the years to come.  See ya' at the reunion for sure.

I enjoyed sitting down at a Booker Experience committee meeting and am excited that it appears we are going to have a true representation of the SHS class of '70's 40th reunion.  Hope the renewed contact list continues to grow and that this will be the biggest and best reunion of all.

Hi Class of 70, my hat's off to our reunion committee, especially Liz Baskerville, who put the web site together and keeps us all engaged and excited as we look forward to the event.  Somehow, in the blink of an eye, 40 years have passed.  It seems like a blink of an eye but when I stop to think of everything that has happened since I graduated high school, it's mind boggling. I'm not sure I'll be able to make it to the reunion, but I do enjoy checking the site from time to time and having the opportunity to say hello.

Hi All, If Sarasota was a 10 hour drive from Boulder Colorado instead of a 10 hour flying day I'd have shown up at some prior reunions. Although it's unlikely I'll drop in for the 40th, I suppose a hello is in order since stats have it that some # may not survive to the 50th (or ought that be, may not survive the 50th?!). And I *still* wanna know who put my class pix way up high on those walls, and how they did it! Bart

Hey,  I just found two students.  Marian White & JoAnne Hamel waiting to hear back from them.  I also wrote to Marcia Wooten Page.  I think her sister is Kathy Wooten & she may be living in Sarasota.
The last time I saw Kathy she was working for an agency here in Sarasota & helped my mother when she was sick.  Hope to find you Kathy!

I commend to everyone’s reading The Desegregation of Sarasota High School: No Longer Separate, But Equal?, which is posted on the Booker Experience page. It does a credible job of explaining the challenges, failures, and limited successes of desegregation during our high school years. It relies heavily on oral interviews with teachers, administrators, and students at SHS during 1967-68, including our classmate Fredd Atkins, whose reflections are most instructive. A quote on page 30 from author James T. Patterson, Professor Emeritus at Brown University, illustrates both the shortcomings of our desegregation experience and our potential for an integrated reunion: “To desegregate is to break down separation of the races and to promote greater equality of opportunity. To integrate is to reach further: to bring together people of different colors and ethnic backgrounds so that they associate not only on an equal basis but also make a real effort to respect the autonomy of other people and to appreciate the virtues of cultural diversity.” As teenagers, most of us lacked the maturity, empathy, and life experiences that would have promoted true integration in 1967-70. As adults nearing 60, we surely are prepared to celebrate and respect each other in both our common humanity and our diversity.

Dear All:  I just read Mike Hartenstine's letter to Fredd Atkins and Fredd's response, which is posted on our website at the link Booker Experience.  Heartfelt thanks to both of you for your candor and to Paul Rubens' initiation of this effort of inclusion. I hope all of us alumni will read the letters and embrace the opportunities for greater understanding and friendship that they present for our future together. Looking forward to seeing ALL of Us!  Chris N

Hello Everybody!  Can't wait to see you all again. As one of the cheerleaders of our class, I thought it would be appropriate to salute the great class of 1970 in our beloved Orange and Black! Can you all believe it:  40 years!!! Tell everyone you know to attend, this one will be a blast!  The Committee, and especially Blythe and all, are working hard to make this one the best ever. See all soon!

Hi, again! I hope anyone who signs in here and knows how to reach ANYBODY else from our class will forward the website info to them so we can really begin to build a complete list of alumni. And in my book, alumni doesn't mean you have to have graduated or even been at SHS all three years. Instead of the number of people for this reunion decreasing, it is our goal this time to have the attendance increase. The committee planning the reunion is awesome by the way, and the whole weekend will be great. Really.

Leslie Beahm has kindly pointed out that in my previous post, I incorrectly typed April 20 instead of April 30 for our reunion date.  Don't be misled!  It's April 30!  Thank you, Leslie.

The Class of 1970 reunion committee is planning an event that is bound to entertain us all.  We are lucky to have such a dedicated group of talented volunteers.  Blythe Bellamo McDonough is again our able chairperson, and Liz Baskerville Beahm has created this superb website.  Mark your calendar for April 20, 2010.
